01 General Eisenhower farewell General Eisenhower, the outgoing Commander of the Atlantic Pact armed forces of Germany, took leave of the Allied troops stationed in Germany.
In Koblenz, the General declined the last parade of the French troops.
At the Frankfurt Stadium, where the American High Commissioner McCloy, generals and admirals of the United States took installation in the Gallery, 200 aircraft of all types flew over the parade field. As in all countries of the Western world the workers of the Federal Republic celebrated "May Day" with huge demonstrations. From the North Sea to the Alps, from Hamburg to Munich, millions of all classes of the population gathered for powerful demonstrations for freedom, peace and social justice. In the rural districts of Bavaria, the workers gathered in the sunshine for a May dance. The focal point of all celebrations was the demonstration for freedom on Berlin's Republic Square. More than half a million people from the West and the East of the divided town gathered near the border of the Soviet sector.
Following Christian Fette, chairman of the German Trade Unions, Federal President Heuss spoke:
Original Sound: "I do not follow too closely the Soviet press, as my pleasure in it is limited. But in some measure I do, and I have never read that people from West-Berlin or West-Germany fled into the East sector or to the East zone to find political refuge."

03. A Prominent Refugee from the East
Gerald Rummler, the personal press attaché of the East Zone's Foreign Secretary Dertinger, has sought refuge in West Berlin. He fled because he was forced by the NKWD to spy on his chief Dertinger, and because, over and above that, he saw through the game that the Soviets are playing with the fate of the German people.

a. Football: Germany vs. Ireland
In the Müngersdorfer Stadium in Cologne the German national football team (black shorts) met a team from Ireland.
After the Germans had missed several chances to score a goal, Ireland also missed a great chance: the ball went over the goal. Posipal shot the first goal for Germany and the Stadium cheered him. Now the Germans had picked up strength and besieged the Irish goal. After a second goal by Walter, Termath shot the 3rd goal for Germany. Germany won the match by 3:0.

b. Sys Beats Neuhaus On Points
In Antwerp the German European Champion Heinz Neuhaus (with striped shorts) and the Belgian Karel Sys met for 10 rounds. Neuhaus tried in vain to land a decisive punch. In the second half, Neuhaus became unsteady and Karel Sys avoided all punches. The international referee decided: 4 rounds for Sys, 3 for Neuhaus, 3 undecided. This was not an official fight for the European title but Neuhaus, for the first time in 28 fights, lost a fight.

c. London: Newcastle Wins the Cup
Winston Churchill greated the teams of Newcastle United (striped shirts) and Arsenal. The Wembley Stadium in London was jammed as the two teams contested for the most famous football trophy in the world The play started with heavy attacks by Arsenal. But Newcastle played with breathtaking skill. Arsenal's defence stood firm in spite of the loss of Barnes, who had to withdraw from the field on account of a torn knee ligament. The tension mounted. Newcastle attacked and the hundred thousands held their breath but the ball hit the crossbar. No goal had been scored but 5 minutes before the end Robledo headed a goal. In this Century no team had ever succeeded in winning the Cup twice in succession, but Newcastle last year's wiener won the Cup again.
