02. Actualities in Brief:

a. Korea
The second Communist offensive in Korea again transformed the surroundings of Seoul into a battle-ground. A barrage stops the storming Red Chinese forces. Behind the front line: General Van Fleet, High Commander of the 8th army, honors the British Gloucester regiment. A batallion of this regiment was surrounded by Reds but held the advancing Communist troops until all their ammunition was gone, thereby blocking the Red offensive.

b. Mr. Morrison in Germany
Herbert Morrison, British Foreign Minister and successor of Ernest Bevin, arrived in Germany for political discussions with Bundes Chancellor Dr. Adenauer. Representatives of the German Trade Unions also spoke with Mr. Morrison. The British Foreign Minister invited the German Chancellor for an offical visit to London. c. Rheingold Train

In Western Germany and Berlin, American "Armed Forces Day" was celebrated with reviews and displays. In Berlin High Commissionar McCloy and high ranking officers of the American forces in Germany reviewed different units of the three services. At Neubiberg Airfield, as in all quarters of the US forces, plants and installations could be visited by the public. a. The Pied Piper of Hamelin
A curiosity from Hamelin. The Pied Piper is there again. But to-day, the re-appearance of this piper is a feast for the children of this old town on the Weser River. At Bad Pyrmont, a European Chess Tournament was held. 15 of the best Chess players of 10 nations took part in this eliminating bout for the world chess championship. The German chess champion Wolfgang Unzicker, Munich, lost none of his 14 games. With 10 points he became second. In a 7 hour game, the Jugoslavian Gligoric beat the senior champion Bogoljubov. Gligoric won the European tournament with 11 points.

c. Football: 1 FC Kaiserslautern vs FC Schalke 04
Elimination bout for the German Football Championship. In Ludwigshafen 60.000 spectators saw the teams of 1 FC Kaiserslautern (dark dress) and FC Schalke 04. The game had brilliant moments. 5 minutes after the kick-off, Basler scored a goal for Kaiserslautern. At the change of sides Schalke tried to equalize. But Kaiserslautern kept its lead and won by 1:0.

Germany is again in the tournaments for the Davis Cup. After the victory over Jugoslavia, Germany played against Denmark in Berlin. Gottfried von Cramm, long trousers, beat the 20-year-younger Danish Kurt Nielsen. Von Cramm won by 6:2, 6:4 and 6:0 and Germany was ahead. The double brought a sharp duel between Cramm-Göpfert (in the background) and the Danish Nielsen-Ullrich. Here too, von Cramm showed his tactical superiority. The double was won by Germany with 6:4, 6:4 and 6:2. The German-Danish Davis Cup tournament was won by Germany with 4:1. Belgium will be the next opponent.
