02. West-Germany: First troops inspecting General Eisenhower's General Eisenhower, the Commander of the Atlantic Pact armed forces, inspected the Allied army in West Germany. It was the first troops inspection of the Commander in Chief since taking over the command of the Western defence force. In Northern Germany, General Eisenhower visit units of the British army of the Rhine. The Commander-in-Chief attended a maneuver of the French occupying forces near the town of Koblenz. Infanterie-, artillery, engineering and armored units were involved.
On the last day of his inspection tour of West Germany, General Eisenhower visited various units of the U.S. Army. Jet fighter rose into a major air exercise. Before leaving after his headquarters General Eisenhower expressed in Paris satisfied about the level of training of the Allied army in the Federal Republic.

The former Foreign Minister Britain died in London on the consequences of a heart disease. Ernest Bevin came from the British trade union movement and was one of the great statesmen who have shaped the political face of Britain in the last decade. His life work was the rights of workers and peace among the Nations.
Ernest Bevin was at the forefront of British foreign policy, as a resolute defender of the free world against the aggressive communism since 1945.

After the settlement of all technical and economical problems some political problems of the new European Montan Union have to be solved. Germany and France now have the historic opportunity of overcoming separation line which, untill now, have separated the two nations. During a press conference in Paris, the German head of the government said that with the signing of the Schuman Plan a new chapter in the history of Europe will begin.

02. General Eisenhower Inspects His New Command
General Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of The Atlantic Pact Forces, inspected the allied armies in Western Germany. It was the first inspection of troops by the Supreme Commander since the taking over of the command of the Western defense forces. In North Germany, General Eisenhower inspected units of the British Rhine Army. Near Koblenz, he attended a manoeuvre of the French occupation forces. Infantry, artillery, pioneer and tank units participated. At the last day of his inspection tour through Western Germany, General Eisenhower inspected units of the US Air Force. Jet planes pass in review. Before his departure for his headquarters in Paris, General Eisenhower expressed his satisfaction about the state of preparedness of the allied armies in the Bundes Republic.

General MacArthur gives over all his commands in the Far East to General Ridgway. Up to now, General Ridgway was Commanding General of the 8th army in Korea. President Truman nominated General Ridgway as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, High Commander of the UN, American High Commander in the Far East and Commanding General of the US forces in the Far East. In a radio speech to the American nation and the world, President Truman confirmed this outstanding decision.
"Our government and other countries associated with us in the UN believe that the best chance of stopping it without a general war is to meet the attack in Korea and defeat it there. A number of events have made it evident that General MacArthur did not agree with that policy. It is of the deepest personal regret that I found myself compelled to take this action.

In historic Nuremberg, the best singers from the American Zone gathered for a Meistersinger competition. On the occasion of this brilliant meeting, sponsored by GYA, Mr. Buttenwieser, Deputy of the American High Commissioner, spoke. Gertrud Wagner from Berlin won the 1st prize. Richard Kogel was second. Fridl Genk, a blind student, got the 3rd prize and a special award.

Zurich was under the fever of the big football game. 25.000 fans from Switzerland and nearly 10.000 from the German Bundes Republic rushed to the Grasshopper Field in this beautiful town. The team leaders exchanged flags. From the beginning the spectators followed the match with deep interest. The German team has big moments. The first turbulent scenes fill the spectators with excitement. In the 9th minute: the first sensational chance for the Swiss team. The German goal keeper stumbles and the score is 1:0 for Switzerland. A dangerous attack leads to a corner-kick. Fritz Walter shoots - a head ball by Otmar Walter - and the score is 1:1. In the 50th minute, Gerritzen shoots another goal. 2:1 for Germany. Some minutes later: the ball comes to Fritz Walter. From 20 meters he shoots another goal for Germany. The outstanding Swiss forwards are attacking. They attack the German goal. An eleven meter lessens the German lead. The score is 3:2. Only a few minutes before the end. The Swiss team tries to equalize. But the final score is 3:2 for Germany. A great game is finished. A happy jubilee success for the German football team.
