01. Buchenwald Trial

The Sentence
After a four-month trial at Dachau against members of the SS, doctors, and guards of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, the sentences were pronounced. Under the Chairmanship of General Kiel, the American Military Tribunal found all 31 defendants guilty. Former General of the Waffen-SS, Josias Prinz zu Waldeck, was the first to hear his sentence.

Ilse Koch, the only woman among the defendants known as the Commandeuse of Buchenwald, was sentenced to life imprisonment. The former commander of the camp, Hermann Pister, wag sentenced to death by hanging. 22 of the accused were sentenced to death, and the rest to long terms of imprisonment. Thus the trial against those responsible for Buchenwald Camp, in which 53.000 people found a horrible death, was brought to its conclusion.

a. Garden party, Salzuflen
The Kurpark of the brine-bath at Salzuflen was the scene of a garden party attended by Britains and Germans. b. Prefabricated houses, Stuttgart
An exhibition of pre-fabricated houses has been established at the Export-Fair grounds in Stuttgart.
At the suggestion of the Military Government, all factories in the U.S. Zonecooperated. The houses are built with a minimum of inland raw-material. Production is carried out by modern and rational methods. Entirely new, for instance, is themanufacturing of walls with complete electrical and sanitary fittings. It is only planning for the future, of course. But the beginning of new developments in house-building is definite. This show displays the results of topnotch technique, and demonstrates what can be done in future in this respect.

c. Sun Observatory
An observatory for sun-exploration is locatad on the peak of the Wendelstein in the Bavarian Alps, 1800 meters above sea level. This location has espacially good observation facilities. By a complicated optical proccss the sunlight is reflected in a telescope and analized. The great tower of the station has apparatus for exploring the activity of the sun. Here the scientists of the Wendelstein record the material for the radio weather forceast. This sun-spot, here photographed, is 13 times bigger then our earth. Here the camera shows immense gas explosions. The Koronograph records everything that happens on the sun.

03. Home-comers from Russia
More and more German P.O.W.'s from the Soviet Union arrive at the border-crossing between the Russian and the Western Zones. In the American and British Zone the home-comers must pass an examination, before they are released. Women too (employees of the former Wehrmacht) are among them.
In northern Bavaria, near Hammelburg, a Red Cross train is used as a discharge camp. Here the homecomers are f[...]d, treated by doctors, and then receive their discharge papers. The sick and disabled men are released first from Russia. Only 16% are able to work right away. The others need special care before they are fit for employment.
The number of the home-comerscannot be estimated, but larger transports are scheduled before the beginning of winter. With K-rations, cigarettes and their papers these home-comers from Russia leave a camp near Ulm. For many of them re-entering civilian life is a hard problem. The Workers Welfar and other organizations help as much as they can.
Collections in public and in factories supply the means with which the home-comers get cloths and some money. Each gift for these collections helps these people. This appeal is addressed to all who can help.
In Westphalia, the Red Cross has established Castle Hüffe as a recreation spot for Russia home-comers. Here they enjoy 6 weeks of rest and recreation.

04. Birthday of G.B.S
At his little country-seat near London the great poet George Bernard Shaw celebrated his 91th birthday. Hishouse contains amultitude of memories and souvenirs. Here is his little garden house, which can be turned toface thesun, which Shaw uses to work in. At present he is writing a new play. The portrait of his wife, who died 4 years ago. And here the poet himself, the imperishable Shaw. Lunch: his house-keeper prepares the table Shaw is still an enthousiastic vegetarian. Leaving his garden-house, Shaw goes to lunch after a little thoughtful stroll through the park. The 91-year-old is still the poet and pilosopher, satyrist and critic of his time, - an original genius.

To-day and Yesterday
On their European tour America's ace tennis-players visited several German towns. Donald Budge, several-time Wimbledon winner. Sarah Cooke, Champion of the U.S.A. Pauline Betz, the best professional. And Bobby Riggs, World Champion of the professionals. And here the tennis-camps of ... well, almost decadesago. In 1900 the four American Sutton sisters were the world-champions of women's tennis. On the occasion of a Welfare Sport Festival, they demonstrated that they still can play. In those days one used to say: only a Sutton is a match for a Sutton. Andeven today these old ladies are still active, allthough the youngest Sutton is over 60 years old. 06. The Most Modern Train in the World
The Stream Line Express Chicago-Los Angeles is the most modern train in the world. At night it takes off from Chicago. The steel cars combine security with comfort. Besides living and sleeping accomodations this train has bath-rooms, hairdressers and observation cars. In the train a steady everage temperature is maintained through the winter in the East, or through the desert heat in the West.
Going west through the Rio Grande Valley and crossing the deserts of Arizona.
The engine developes 4.000 H.P. and is driven by 2 Diesel Motors. The 3.500 km distance from Chicago to Los Angeles corresponds to a straight air Line from Moscow to Lisbon.
This enormus distance is covered in 40 hours. The east and west of the United Statesare connected by the most modern train in the world.

07. Cologne:

50th German Athletic Championships
At Cologne Stadium for the 50th time the German Athletic Championships were held.
In wonderful weather and good track conditions more than 1000 athlete competed. 18 new German records of this year were attained.
Here is the 110 meter hurdle race. Zepernik, Osnabrueck leads right from the start and wins in 15,1 seconds. The long jump. Winner was Luther, Hamburg, with 7 meters, 9 centimeters. In the 5.000 meter race Warnemünde of Hemburg and Eberlein of Munich are leading and have an exciting contest. Warnemünde carries off the victory with 15 min. 19,6 sec. Eberlein was second.
The women, too, turned in good results. In throwing the javellin Mrs. Wolf, Nuremberg, was best with 42.83 meters. A thrilling performance was the 100 meterrace. Fischer, Krefeld wins in 10,5 seconds.
With these results the German athlets are reaching international level.
