The highlight of the events in Berlin was a demonstration in the Lustgarten. In Hamburg, in spite of the rainy day, 60 000 workers and employees marched through the streets to the grounds of the exhibition "Planten un Blomen," where among others the chairman of the Hamburg T.U.s addressed the audience.

02. The Fire Disaster of Texas City
The North American harbour town Texas City was hit by a tremendous fire and explosion disaster. For days this tragedy dominated the headlines of the American press.
An explosion on a French freighter was the direct cause for the catastrophe.
Burning rains set the Benzol-containers of a chemical factory afire - and shortly after refineries and 50 oil-tanks were burning. Poison gas spread over the harbour and the city. For 24 hours Texas City was cut off from the outer world.
Among the population a panic broke out. Again and again huge fires started. The endles explosions had the power of a volcano eruption.
Up to now one-third of Texas City is destroyed. More than one thousand people were killed and three thousand badly hurt. The damage uns up to 30 million Dollars.
Texas has become a ghost town after the fire and was evacuated by its inhabitants.

03. Bremen to-day
The old Hanse town of Bremen has lost more than 40% of its housing capacity of 60 000 Houses about 25 000 were demolished.
Many famous historical buildings as the "Stadtwaage," the "Kornhaus," and the "Packhauszeilen" do not longer exist.
The market place with its historical buildings escaped undamaged.
The "Roland" - Bremen's landmark - is intact, as well the city-hall, a magnifiecent building of the 15th century. The cathedral on the other hand has been damaged and is at present undergoing repairs.
The famous Boettcher-Street has also suffered. Bremen once prospered by her world-wide trade - now her harbour is a reception centre for imports of the Allies for the British and American Zone in Germany.
Bremen to-day - the picture of a city which is endeavouring to regain its Importance as a traditional centre of commerce.

04. Actualities in brief:

a. Greece
At present Greece is a focal point of international politics. A UN Commission undertook a trip into the interior of the country to inspect the manyfold problems at its place of birth. The dangerous drive by car and on horseback to the scene of troubles and want. Innerpolitical quarrel and also obscure border conditions do not let the country come to rest.
The representatives of the UN inspect prison camps, too. All parties are heard in order to get an objective view on all problems in question.

b. Penicillin discoverer visits Vienna

The Fountain Pen-King, Milton Reynolds, started on a world flight from New York in order to break the existing record of 91 hours. Reynolds and his two companions first flew via Paris, Kairo, Kalkutta to Shanghai. Their next stop was Tokyo where they were received by friendly Geishas.
And on they flew over Alaska back to New York where they landed after 79 hours. A Jules Verne once dreamed of 80 days for a round trip of the globe. To-day it takes less than 80 hours.

05. Reconstructions:

Hanomag
The Hanomag Factories which once produced the famous, much lampooned and much beloved midget motor-cars, are now one the most important suppliers of agriculture.
After the heavy damages of the war were repaired, the production of tractors is gradually increasing. Appr. 200 field tractors leave each month the large work halls which are fitted with the most modern equipment.
The plant has its own workshops for casting and for motor and gear making, and is thus independent exept for deliveries of specialised parts.
Each finished motor has to pass examination. Then, the tractor is put together on the assembly line. Besides tractors the plant with its 4000 employees produces steam rollers, trailers of different types and spare parts of all kinds.
The production of the Hanomag plant is an invaluable help for the farmer who uses Hanomag machines from the ploughing of the fields to the threshing of the corn.

06. Filmproduction resumed in Geiselgasteig
The first feature-film in the American Zone is now in production in the undamaged Geiselgasteig Studios near Munich. The film has the title: "Between Yesterday And To-morrow."
Here, as everywhere else, material for the sets, the costumes and the large technical apparatus is in short supply.
Pick it up! Each nail is precious!
The damaged Regina Palace Hotel in Munich is one of the principal scenes of the film. Here, inmidst the ruins, decisive incidents of the screenplay are staged. The reality of to-day forms the background for many parts of this feature.
And then - one of the miracles which unfortunately only happen in the movies - the lobby of the hotel is reconstructed in the Geiselgasteig studios. The stairs, the entrance and everything else is recreated as it was before. And the hotel-manager once upon a time is to-day the actor, Victor Staal. Lights! The cameraman sets the light for a scene with Sybille Schmitz and Victor de Kowa. And while the makeup-man, light electricians. sound engineer and all the other collaborators of the technical staff finish their last preparations director Harald Braun rehearses with the actors.

Now the shooting of the rehearsed scene. Ten hours of work in the studio produces a scene which only lasts 2 to 3 minutes on the screen.
Thus an episode in the Regina Hotel comes to life ... in its filmic shape ... between yesterday and to-morrow.

07. Sports:

a. Forest Race
In Kassel 80 runners from all four Zones compete in the German Forest Race Championship, the first to be held after 12 years. Right from the beginning a leading group forms and keeps close together over the whole distance of 6 kilometers.
Through parks and along rivers they run to the winning pole. Eberlein, Munich, just recovered from a leg injury, ran a great race. He comes close to the winner: Josef Legge, Bochum, 19 min., 27 sec.
Eberlein was second and thus scored the team victory for "1860 Munich" before "Rot Weiss" Oberhausen.

b. Bicycle race
Long distance cycle races are a wear and tear test for material and rider. The traditional race Berlin-Cottbus-Berlin was such a test. 80 competitors, the cream of the profissionals, drove a distance of 260 kilometers.. In 1909 the race was held for the first time. This one is the 30th. In 1947, too, every star performer is on the track.
In Cottbus they turn back. It was a thrilling race: crashes and break-downs threw prospective competitors out of the race. Only one-third of the starting teams reached the winning pole. Herman Schild, Chemnitz, won in 7 hours and 14 Minutes.
