01. Repairing the "Munich Kindl"

At the same time another landmark of Munich was recovered under the ruins of the former "Residence" (the Royal Palace): The Patrona Bavariae, the Patron Saj[...]t of Bavaria.
This model for all Bavarian Madonnas, together with other historical sculpture, was buried in 1942 under the "Kaiserstairs". Now the "Madonna with the Sickle," created in 1600 by Hans Krumper, has been recovered undamaged after removing 2000 cubic meters if rubble. When the Residence is rebuilt Patrona Bavariae will come back to her old place.

02. Re-education

To solve this problem the Working Office in Frankfurt established re-education courses under the direction of trained teachers. The building-trade needs young apprentices. In these courses the young applicant learns side by side with old handicraftsmen, and with P.O.W's who are seeking new professions. After re-education they will find good and useful jobs.

a. Hagenbeck Circus Hamburg
Hagenbeck Circus celebrates its 60th anniversary, and its director, Lorenz Hagenbeck, is congratulated on his 65th birthday. The elephant brings his birthday greetings to the tiny Hamburg house in which Hagenbeck lives. And now congratulations arrive from his family and from all over the world. Hagenbeck's Circus has performanced in 20 nations and all four quarters of the globe.
The double-jubilee is a milestone on the road of this world-famous institution.

b. Bull's - eye panes
Broken glass brings luck - and more that: new windows! The recipe: you get some lead - - toy soldiers or pipes - andbring them to a work-shop. There the lead is melted and cast into sticks. Then the pieces of glass are cut and put together, sealed with lead.
Thus in this Berlin workshop good-looking windows are made from old and broken ones.
Necessity is still the mother of invention.

c. Flowers
One old custom still holds good: "Say it with flowers!" And the old German flower nurseries help you say it. A large establishment in Waiblingen near Stuttgart is fitted out with modern equipment for growing all kinds of flowers including tropical plants.
Here is the Queen among the blossoms: orchids of many kinds and colours.
15% of the huge glasshouses are used for hybridizing new flowers. In another department chickens are kept.
The warm glasshouse makes them grow faster.

04. Buchenwald Trial
In Dachau the American Military Tribunal headed by General Kiel, began the trial against SS-members, doctors and guards of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
The 31 accused are those most incriminated of 6.000 persons who belonged to the guards of Buchenwald and its branches.
The interpreters and recorders were put under oath.The Cief prosecutor, William Denson, in his opening address declared that he would prove that all the accused had worked under a general plan. About 53.000 people of several nationalities met a terrible fate in Buchenwald. The chief defendants are: Prince Josias zu Waldeck, former General of Waffen-SS; the Commandeuse of Buchenwald, Ilse Koch, the only woman in this trial; and the former Camp-Commander Hermann Pister. Terrible exhibits bear witness to the undiscribable horrors of the Third Reich's largest concentration camp: lamp shades, book bindings, and gloves made of human skin and shrunken heads of the victims.
The trial began exactly two years after Buchenwald's liberation by American troops.

a. Gutenberg Bible
A sensational auction was held in the famous Southby Auction Rooms, in London.
After heavy bidding the first volume of Gutenberg's bible reached the record bid of 22.000 Pounds Sterling.
The bible was the first book printing shop of Johann Gutenberg almost 500 years ago.
Only three copies of this precious edition are in existance. The book which changed ownership in London has 324 large pages and is bound by wooden plates covered with calf-skin. During the last 60 years its value increased from 500 Pounds to the new record price, although this is an incomplete edition.

b. Snake catching, South Africa
Snake catching in South Africa - and all you need for this dangerous and thrilling profession is presence of mind and skill. A mistake may cost your life.
The bite of a kobra kills a grown-up person within two minutes. The snakes have to be caught right behind the neck. Like this!
Now the snake is helpless and is put into the box of vipers ... for further use.
Some of them are eaten. Fried snake is a delicacy among experts.
The rest are sent to a Laboratory in Capetown where the poison is taken from them and manufactured into a serum.

In Paris the Queen of the Ice was received with acclaim. And in her home town of Ottawa, Canada, the welcome was tremendous: the mayor paid tribute to her success, and the drive through the town was a triumphal procession. Even the wind blew a welcome.

06. Helgoland Disarmed
Helgoland, the green island in the North Sea was a famous watering place before the war. During the war it was a base for the German Navy: now it is a mass of ruins. The remains of the fortifications are to be blown up. A group of reporters from Europa and America, among them German journalists and cameramen, visit the island. The lower land with its artificial harbour show marks of the attack which destroyed Helgoland in the last days of the war. There is hardly a house left. The grounds look like a moon-crater landscape. The liftfrom the lower to the upper lands is destroyed, too. The upper land and the village of Helgoland is even more devastated. The island, which was one huge fortification, had long-range guns and submarine shelters, and a system of underground ammunition chambers 20 kms long. The ammunition left in these tunnels is going to be used for the big explosion. Here torpedo ignition heads are brought into the tunnel and the submarine shelters. 6.700 tons of dynamite will be touched off at the same time -- the largest explosion recorded since the atomic bombs of Bikini.
Helgoland will still exist after the blowing-up ... but the fortifications will be completely destroyed.
