01. RAF rescues German seamen
At the air-base Blankensee the British Airforce received the wireless message: "German fish cutters marooned by pack-ice in the bay of Lübeck. Men in danger!"
While group-captain Dwyer gives last instructions to the pilots, food, fuel and water are taken on board. Three Martinet-planes take-off - this time on a peaceful mission of rescue.
Flying low the planes cross the frozen Baltic-Sea. All shipping is paralysed. Suddenly, - a black spot appears inmidst of the glittering ice. It comes closer and closer. The cutter! The plane circles down in order to find the best place and moment for the throw. Now the packages are thrown - they land only about 30 meters from the boat. The task is accomplished: the second plane approaches - the supplying of the fishermen menaced by hunger and cold is continued until the cutter is afloat again.

02. Truman addresses the Congress
In Washington the Senate and the House of Representatives assembled for a joint meeting. For the first time the session was transmitted also by television. After the new speaker was introduced and the new Members of Congress were sworn in Truman gives the traditional account on the State of the Union. The president dealt particularly with internal questions of economics and social policy.
The foreign political implication of these problems result from Truman's statement: "What we do or don't at home not only concernes ourselves, but millions all over the world."
Harry Truman is the twentieth president in the USA whose party has not the majority in Congress. But this does by no means prevent full and harmonious cooperation of all for the benefit of the Nation.

03. Ravensbrück-Trial
At Curio-House in Hamburg the Allied Military Tribunal, presided over by the British Mayor-General Westropp, sentenced the responsibles for the concentration camp Ravensbrück, the largest and most terrible women-prison of history. 16 men and women were accused for inhuman treatment and the killing of thousands of prisoners of all nationalities.
The defendants were brought up one by one to receive the sentence. Death by hanging was pronounced on:
Joh. Schwarzhuber, former commandant of Ravensbrück.
The former SS-womens-guard Dorothea Binz.
Carmen Maria Mory, whose adventurous career made her a central figure of the trial.
Altogether the death sentence was pronounced in 11 cases.
The others got long-term penal servitude.
The two month trial disclosed one of the most terrible chapters of human cruelty and human suffering.
Ravensbrück, according to the words of a Norwegian witness, was: A Hell on Larth.

04. Earth quake in Japan
For the second time in a generation Japan was devasted by a terrific earth-quake. The centre of the quake was 75 kilometers off the coast in the ocean, six tidal waves rolled over the coast and caused severe damage. More than 800 people lost their lives, thousands were injured, hundred of thousands were made homeless.
The district in the South of Osaka and South-West of Tokio suffered most. The Seismographs showed that this quake was five times more severe than the one the year of 1923, in which 143.000 people were killed. Only the fact that the centre of the new disaster was on the bottom of the ocean, prevented greater destruction and loss of life.

05. England:

Royal family travels to South-Africa
A drive through wintry London starts off the historic journey of the British Royal family to South-Africa. Passing the Parliament they drive to Waterloo-Station. King George is accompanied by Queen Elisabeth and the prinzesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Members of the government with primeminister Attlee, as well as personal friends and relatives came to say "good-bye". A special train brings the party to Portsmouth. Here the battleship "Vanguard" awaits the Royal party - it will be their floating home during the 16 days trip to Capetown. The King, in Admirals uniform, is the first to board the ship. According to British naval customs the augustguest is piped aboard.

06. 150 years Franz Schubert
With concerts and official ceremonies Vienna celebrated the 150th Birthday of her great son Franz Schubert. Schubert's birthhouse in 54 Nussdorfer street was redecorated for the occassion and opened to the public.

07. Rabbits instead of Cannons
The Zeughaus in Berlin, formerly a museum for war-history and arms, was transformed for two days into a monumental rabbits warren.
800 selected rabbits of all kinds were exhibited by the Association of German Rabbits Breeders.

Ant the Angora Rabbit. It can be shorn every three months, yielding 400 to 600 grams of wool a year.
From the raw wool to the finished product. All goods shown here derive from rabbits which are getting more and more popular - as wool and far producer and finally, as welcome addition to the menu.

08. Sport:

a. Trotting-race, Berlin
A trotting-race at 12 degrees below zero needs certain preparations for all participants.
In Berlin, inspite of the freezing cold many fans attend the wintry trotting races.
The start, not for the Derby but certainly for the coldest race of the season.
The track is cleared of snow and ice, the horses go as fast as they can in order to get back to their warm stable.
The main race of the day was won by Frömming on "Purzel".
So, that is over. And after the race the order of the day is no longer to warm up but to cool down.

b. Judo, Wien
The supreme art of self-defence is Judo - a special form of Ju-Jitsu.
In Salzburg the representatives of Vienna and Salzburg met in a friendly match.
Vienna's Judo-fighters were far superior and scored 5:0 points.
Finally two masters give a demonstration of first class Judo: [...]rof, Fleck, Budapest, and Olympic Champion Franz Nimfuehr, Vienna.

c. Ice-revue, Munich
The Munich Prinzregenten Stadium is the scene of an ice revue "Round the World".
The round trip on skates begins in Germany with "Tempo and Rythm".
A South American Rumba.
In France a harbour scene with Apaches.
And the temperamentful Can-Can.
And finally: "Viennese Waltz" - at 10 degrees below zero but full of summerly romance and charm.
