04. Monte Cassino is being rebuilt
In the spring of 1944, the Monte Cassino Monastery which was fortified by German troops as a military stronghold was entirely destroyed.
Now the monks begin the reconstruction.
The monastery's bells lie silent and broken .. and remainders of the valuable library, which once consisted of 120.000 volumes, are saved and classified in toilsome labor.
This is the third time in the 13 centuries of Monte Cassino's history that the venerable Benedictine monastery was destroyed - to rise again in its former magnitude and splendor.

05. What is the weather going to be?
How are the weather prospects? This question asked daily and hourly and everywhere can now again be answered precisely and reliably. All important German weather stations have resumed full activity. The highest observatory stands on top the Zugspitze, 9.800 ft. above sea-level. In this nearly 50 years old weather station all meteoroligical phenomena such as wind direction, force of the wind, and the rays of the sun are recorded and the findings passed on.
A weather-balloon is released. By means of the radio-probe fixed to the balloon the wind direction and intensity can be measured up to hights of from 45.000 to 60.000 ft.
9.300 ft. lower, on the level of the sea, weather stations are installed, too.
On fireships moored in the coastal waters of the German Sea, besides routine measurements, the currents and the temperature of the ocean are recorded.
These scientific weather forecasters belong to the most important advisors of air traffic and navigation. At every weather station daily some 6.000 weather reports arrive from all over the world. They are evaluated and recorded in the weather map. Thus the weather forecast is composed by the synchronized activity of all weather stations and then is broadcasted by the various radio stations.

German track and field championships 1946.
In Frankfort/Main the first German postwar track and field championships take place. In idial weather 25.000 fans view exciting contests and fine performances.
No new records but several best performances of the year are achieved.
The 5.000 metre race. In the 5. round Eberlein, Munich, takes the lead. He wins easily in 15:12,4 minutes. The hammer throw is won by Olympic champion Hein, Hamburg, with 51.62 metres.
The 110 metre hurdles for men - on the last lap Zepernick, Osnabrück, outruns young Trossback and carries off the title with 15.6 seconds.
The high jump for women is easily won by Miss Eckelt, Munich, with the fine performance of 1.57 metres.
The 100 metres for men - 4 competitors keep closely together till the end. Pfeiffer, Frankfort, is the winner. One-time Champion Hubert Huben congratulates him.
Pole-vault - Landschütz, Cologne, elears 3.70 metres and becomes thus the new German champion. 80 metre hurdles for women - Miss Domagalla, Frankfort, sets up a year's mark with 11.8 seconds.
The 4 x 100 metre relays for men resulted in a sharp races.
The "Stuttgarter Kiekers" carry off the title in 43.5 seconds before "Einreacht. Frankfort".
1500 metres. During the first round the field is still close together. Then Dompert, Stuttgart, takes the lead. Shortly before the goal Kaindl, Munich, spurts and wins in 3:59.6 minutes, setting a new year's mark.

07. Bikini:

Atomic explosion under water
"Welt im Film" shows today the original pictures of the second historic atomic experiment of Bikini. During this experiment - for which an atomic bomb was exploded for the first time under water - in addition to the 87 guinea pig ships, submarines are moored under water and on the surface.
The signal flag is hoisted. The mechanism of the atomic bomb is started.
The last crews leave the target fleet.
On board the American battleship "Mount Mc.Kinley" the head of "Operation Crossroads", Admiral Blandy, receives the report: "All preparations finished. The experiment can be started."
Minutes before the blast. The measuring instruments are checked for the last time.
Cameramen and scientists wait for the decisive moment. A few seconds to go. Fire!
The sea surges up from the giant blast and an enormous column of water races skywards. Shortly after the explosion the tower of water is more than 10.000 ft. high and then crashes down in a gigantic cascade. More than one million tons of water strikes the target fleet with shattering force.
During the test pilotless airplanes fly over the target area. These are the photos which were taken by the automatic camera ... pictures of an explosion equaling a blast of 50.000 tons of T.N.T.
Once more the blast, taken by an automatic camera from one of the control towers at Bikini Atoll. Titanic forces hurl the water skyward and then it crashes down like an avalanche. An observer said: "It was like a cataract from Mars."
Hours later - after the dangerous radioactivity of the water had diminished - the first control ships approach the test fleet.
Radioactivity is constantly checked by Geiger-counters.
The Japanese battleship "Nagato" is listing badly and sinks a few hours after these pictures were taken.
The American aircraft carrier "Saratoga" is heavily damaged and sinks. A total of 16 ships was destroyed.
This under-surface experiment is of the utmost importance to the progress of science. Also, it has proved again and decisively the immense elementary power of atomic energy ... the domination and utilization of which is the aim and purpose of the UN Atom Contro1 Commission.
The dominating personality of the Commission, Bernard M. Baruch, has stated in two sentences the theme and motive of its work: "Science has taught us how to use atomic power. It is within the sphere of human duty to use atomic energy for the best of humanity instead for its destruction."
