Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, one of the world's most remote places, was the scene of the greatest scientific test in history: The drop of an atomic bomb on 73 ships. The brief symbolic designation of the test was "Operation Crossroads", designed to bring about decisive disclosures as to many effects of atomic energy hitherto unknown. These pictures show the preparation for the test.
