02. Prague

Karl Hermann Frank executed
The sentence of death pronounced against Karl Hermann Frank, former head of the SS police and State-Minister for Bohemia and Moravia, was carried out in the Prague Pankraz Jail.
Frank was found guilty of destroying the Czechoslovakian Constitution, and of innumerable crimes against right and humanity. He was responsible for the annihilation of Lidice, and the mass-murder of its population.
And this was the end of another Nazi bigshot.

03. German Highlights

a. Explosion disaster, Celle
Five thousand tons of explosives went up in flames in the salt mine at Haenigsen, near Celle, where huge stocks of former Wehrmacht ammunition were stored 650 metres below ground. The fire was brought under control immediately after the catastrophe, thus preventing the explosion of another 3.000 tons. The rescue crews could not reach the center of the holocaust because of the violent fire underground. 33 miners died in the blast.

b. Corpus Christi Day, Cologne
The first post-war Corpus Christi Day procession in Cologne was attended by great numbers of the devout in this city. The solemn procession passed through the Ringstrasse and the ruined city.
The cathedral chapter and ecclesiastic dignitaries were headed by Dr. Frings, archbishop of Cologne. The procession was followed by a service held at the south entrance of the cathedral.

c. Medical Supply Depot, Fulda
In 1943 the Wehrmacht established its biggest supply depot underground in the Neuhof potassium mine near Fulda. This depot has been released by the American occupation authorities to the government of Greater Hesse for the treatment of civilians.
Enormous stocks, worth more than 15 million Reichsmarks, were stored here, including 20 freight loads of cotton-wool, 40 of vaseline, 30 of bandage, 7.000 kilograms of quinine, and more than 100 million vitamin tablets. In addition, there were great numbers of sun-ray lamps, sets of surgical instruments, and other medical supplies.
These materials, totalling over 800 freight-car loads, will now serve to relieve the serious shortage of medical and surgical supplies.

d. Repairing a church steeple, Berlin
The damage caused by artillery fire to the steeple of Matthäus Church, Berlin-Steglitz, is being repaired. The steeple was in imminent danger of collapse. Repairing war-damaged church towers requires special training, and special implements, too.
Every worker has to be, literally, a "top" man. Tools and worknen are hoisted by the tower elevator. This method does away with expensive scaffolding, which in this instance would have cost 68.000 marks and much timber.
The steeple specialists perform all necessary work: they are masons, tilers and plumbers at the same time.
And they are also excellent Alpinists, although their mountain peaks are located in the middle of a big city.

04. Paris:

Foreign Minister's Conference
Many important matters have been discussed at the Paris conference of the foreign ministers of England, America, Soviet Russia and France, Among other things, decisions have been reached regarding the future of Italian colonies and the city of Trieste.

They spear their prey in the romantic hunting grounds in the depths of the sea.

c. The white Maharadjah of Sarawak
Sir Charles Brooke, the white Maharadjah of Sarawak, Northern Borneo, returned to his kingdom after an absence of four and a half years. For 104 years Sarawak was an independent country under British protection.

On August 3rd he will fight for the title against the present champion, Walter Neusel.
