162 passengers and members of the crew lost their lives. Only nine could be rescued.
A diver fastens the hawsers to the ship - 48 ft below the surface.
The steam-windlasses now begin to work and hoist the "Lichtwark" gradually to the surface.
After a weeks work the wreck can be pumped dry and towed off for official investigation.
Another large-scale disaster occured in Berlin. The Alexander barracks which at the time was housing police troops was destroyed and burned down after a heavy explosion.
Town mayor Dr. Werner and police president Markgraf inspect the scene of the disaster.
The explosion was caused by careless handling of a hand-grenade, setting off 2'000 ctrs. of ammunition.
Many were killed and 120 hurt.
Every house in the vicinity was damaged and had to be evacuated, making thousands homeless.

03. USA:

Churchill Speaks in Fulton
President Truman and Winston Churchill recently visited Fulton in the president's home state, Missouri.
Mr. Churchill receives an Honourary Degree at the Westminster University in Fulton.
Then President Truman who himself holds a Fulton degree introduces Churchill to the audience.
Churchill acknowledges bestowal of the degree in his own humourous manner and then addresses the assembly of 3'000 in a half-hour speech.

04. Bathing Baby Beauties
The municipal Kaulsdorf hospital in the Russian Sector of Berlin recently opened a bathing etablishment for babies. Here, mothers who have no fuel at home can give their little ones a daily warm bath.
There is no charge.

05. London Cleans Up
Special equipment is busy day and night to clear away the airraid shelters in London.
This is Heymarket getting back into pre-war shape.
Simultaneously, reconstruction work starts on the House of Parliament which was partly damaged in 1941. First, rubble and ruins have to be removed.
Stone-masons, bricklayers and other workmen are engaged in reconstructing the House of Parliament as it was.

06. Sport News
In still wintry Sweden a motorcycle race is staged on a frozen glass-like lake, the first one of it's kind for seven years.
Round after round the lead changes and the 8'000 spectators get more than their money's worth of thrills.
The winner is Bertil Carlsson - Swedens dirttrack King of the Ice.
For the first time in British boating history a girl steers a crew. With tender hand she navigates eight U.S. servicemen through the swirling water. Alas the pretty cox will not be a showpiece of the boat-raced between Oxford and Cambridge as that matter can only be settled between the two University teams themselves.

07. Nuremberg The defence
A new important phase of the Nuremberg Trial commences. The defence. Each of the accused has the right to speak for himself and for his fellow accused. Besides, a large number of witnesses for the defendants, will be heard in court.
The former General Bodenschatz is the first witness for Goering.
Each witness can - after questioning by the defence - also be crossexamined by the prosecution.

After Bodenschatz the former Field-Marshal Milch testifies for his former chief Goering, particularly in all questions concerning rearmament.
The German air-force, he sais, was created only for defence-purposes.
The British prosecutor Roberts thereupon reminds him of Goerings statement that the German air-force was to spread itself over the globe like a corps of revenge.
All witnesses admit that Goering was the creater of the Gestapo and the concentration-camps. The former Field-Marshal General Kesselring was asked by the American chief prosecutor to give his opinion on these institutions.

Replying to his counsels questions, Goering is allowed to give an extensive review of the political development since his first meeting with Hitler. Concerning the so-called "assumption of power" he says.

08. Industrial Reconstruction
Almost all Germans blast-furnaces have been idle since the end of the war. Now, after the Allied Control Committee has fixed the quota of German steel production at 5,8 million tons a year, the first furnace in the American Zone is put into action again.
Representatives of the Milit. Governm., the German Governm. and of the industrial groups of Greater Hesse attend and stress in speeches the great importance of this step towards the revival of industry.
Lt. Col. White starts the furnace which belongs to the 200 year old Buderus works in Wetzlar. About 6'000 tons of ore will be produced here each month, which in turn will be refined into steel. Steel is the backbone of industry and so the smoking furnaces symbolize: Reconstruction.
